A FERTILITY CULT:
San Daili is an ancient sanctuary of Celtic origin, surrounded by legends that live in its Christianized cave. At its entrance there is a stone basin that collects water from the cave waiting for a fertility rite that still occurs nowadays. The women visiting the cave put as many fingers in the water as children they want to birth. It is a pagan, ancestral rite. The Hermitage, full of votive offerings, exvotos and candles, is a witness that this cult to the mother earth, to the cave, is still very much alive. The work, painted as a ritual / Performance in the cave, was made with the waters of the Deba River, which flows at the bottom of the canyon next to the cave. This river is also linked to the Celtic deity of the waters. Saint Daili is not Saint Elias, it is Saint Ylia, who is the Christianization of the divinity Yvulia, of Celtic origin. A goddess linked to the cult of the waters.
